Position Overview
PayPal is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to serve as a senior technical leader within its web SDK ecosystem. This role plays a key part in shaping the architecture, quality, and scalability of JavaScript-based SDKs used by developers globally to integrate PayPal’s payment solutions.
The position combines hands-on technical contribution with architectural leadership, cross-team collaboration, and mentorship. The Staff Software Engineer will influence engineering standards, guide complex initiatives, and help drive long-term platform strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and evolution of PayPal’s JavaScript Web SDKs, ensuring performance, security, and ease of integration
- Act as a technical leader across projects or systems, coordinating and guiding the work of other engineers
- Define technical direction and ensure alignment with business and platform objectives
- Drive architectural decisions and promote best practices for engineering rigor and scalability
- Collaborate with backend, platform, infrastructure, and product teams to deliver end-to-end solutions
- Mentor engineers across levels, providing guidance on design, implementation, and problem-solving
- Identify and resolve complex technical challenges while balancing tradeoffs between time, quality, risk, and maintainability
- Participate in and lead code reviews and technical discussions
- Improve engineering systems, workflows, and development processes to enhance productivity and code quality
- Represent PayPal in external technical or developer-facing interactions when appropriate
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 5+ years of relevant software engineering experience (staff-level expectations typically align with 8+ years)
- Strong expertise in JavaScript and TypeScript, including modern front-end architecture, tooling, and SDK development
- Proven experience designing and scaling SDKs, APIs, or developer platforms for third-party use
- Solid understanding of backend systems and API integration patterns
- Experience leading large technical initiatives and influencing architectural decisions across teams
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate in cross-functional environments
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and elevate other engineers
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Experience
- Open-source contributions or experience building developer-focused platforms
- Experience working on SDKs or tools designed specifically for external developers
- Exposure to large-scale distributed systems
Compensation & Benefits
- Base Salary Range (Austin, TX): $160,500 – $238,700 annually
